Welcome

Celebrating 40 years of community service in 2007

The Beginning

At a meeting in January 1967, 51 prospective Legion members filled out forms, paid their $7.00 dues and decided to apply for a Legion Charter.

At the end of February 1967, they were informed that a Charter had been granted and from henceforth they would be known as Scarborough Centennial (in honor of 1967 Centennial year) Branch No. 614.

On Friday, Apr. 28, 1967, at Branch #10 on Pape Ave., the Provincial President presented the Charter. Also present were the Mayors of Scarborough and East York (Abe Campbell and True Davidson). At this time nearly 50 Members were initiated and with some transfers, there were 69 Charter Members. Comrade Herb Baker, a founding Member, became the first Branch President.

Vimy Ridge 90th Anniversary

On Easter Sunday, April 9, 1917, 100,000 Canadian soldiers stormed and captured Vimy Ridge in France. It was one of the great victories of World War I. Although the cost to Canada was high - 3,600 dead and more than 7,000 wounded - historians say this victory marked the birth of Canada as a nation.

On Easter Sunday April 9th, 2007 an Ecumenical Commemoration Service was held at the Agincourt Pentecostal Church in Scarborough to commerate the battle of Vimy Ridge.
Members from various faiths offered prayers and RCL Branch 614 WW2 Veteran William Whitehead (at left) spoke on the importance of why we remember.
Wreaths were laid by members of all levels of government along with RCL Branch 614 President Sheila Harris. The colours were proudly carried by members of the Zone D5 Colour Guard. Canon Prue Chambers, RCL Zone D5 Chaplain (above in white) gave the blessing.

A reception followed the service at which time a presentation was made by The Honorable Gerry Phillips M.P.P. Scarborough Agincourt, to RCL Branch 614 President Sheila Harris. The plaque commemorates the Vimy Ridge battle and highlights the newly opened Veteran memorial wall on the Ontario Legislature. grounds. Shown at right from left to right, MPP Gerry Phillips, RCL Branch 614 President Sheila Harris, MPP Bas Balkissoon, Scarborough Rouge River and MPP Wayne Arthurs Pickering-Ajax -Uxbridge.

Posted around the reception room were many hand drawn posters and poems and letters that were prepared by students from the five Scarborough Public Schools. It was an amazing and moving display from the point of view of the students reflecting on the great sacrifices made by the canadian soldiers in the battle for Vimy Ridge 90 years ago. Poster at left by a Grade 6 pupil signed Regan.

Thanks to Pastor Jim McKenzie and volunteers from the Agincourt Pentocostal Church and to the staff and volunteers from the Office of the Honourable Jim Karygiannis. M.P. Scarborough Agincourt for arranging for this Commemoration Service.
